DAVID LLOYD LEISURE BREAKS INTO THE GERMAN MARKET AS IT ACQUIRES HEALTH CITY BAD HOMBURG, NEAR FRANKFURT

David Lloyd Leisure (DLL) today announces that it has acquired its first club in Germany -  Health City Bad Homburg near Frankfurt. Located 20 kilometres north of Frankfurt, DLL is planning to invest over €10 million in refurbishing and developing the site.

The completion of the deal falls on the day after David Lloyd Leisure opened its Acton Park club (formerly The Park Club) in West London, following a £9 million to completely transform the existing facilities.  1 June also marks the first anniversary of the acquisition of 14 UK clubs from Virgin Active and the opening of the third of its premium brand Harbour Club in Kensington, London. At the same time last year, the group announced that it had exchanged contracts to acquire three more sites - The Academy Club in Harrogate, its first Italian club, Malaspina Sporting and Health Club in Milan as well as The Park Club. In January 2018 DLL announced it was set to buy City Green Sporting Club near Geneva.

Including Bad Homburg, the company now has 15 clubs in mainland Europe, with locations in Holland, Belgium, Spain, Ireland, Italy, France and now Germany in addition to its 99 clubs in the UK. The acquisition of this new club means that DLL has the now passed its 600,000 member milestone.

DLL continues to look for expansion opportunities across Europe, including acquisitions and new build sites.

Glenn Earlam, CEO David Lloyd Leisure commented; “We believe that there is a huge untapped market for family-focused health and leisure clubs in Germany, and so we hope that our acquisition of Bad Homburg will be the first of many David Lloyd Clubs in this market. It’s the latest step in our ambitious European growth plans as we continue to look to expand into our existing territories of Spain, Holland, Belgium, Ireland and Italy as well as breaking into other new markets.

“2018 promises to be another busy year for David Lloyd Leisure as we line up further acquisitions and we are well on track to achieve our target of 150 clubs by 2026.”

Currently a large adults-only fitness facility, the Bad Homburg club is ideally placed to serve a large and active membership.  DLL will completely refurbish the existing facilities as well as develop the site to offer extensive leisure and sports facilities to fit with David Lloyd Clubs’ premium family-focused brand.

Plans include a complete refurbishment of the gym, two group exercise studios and cafébar, as well as building new indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a new HIIT class studio Blaze, an outdoor spa garden and terrace, new wet changing rooms, adults only and business zones, children’s soft play area and DL Kids facilities.
